1962, September 11: Sources: Please Please Me (Andy White)

“PLEASE PLEASE ME”

The Mono mix from this day's session with Andy White was released on Anthology 1.

An odd refutation of the Anthology 1 liner notes came in a letter to Belmo’s Beatleg News, issue #52, which staked a claim that this mix is from the November 26, 1962 recording session. If true, it would indicate that either Andy White played with The Beatles on November 26 (meaning that Anthology 1 participates in a conspiracy), or else Anthology 1 simply has the date wrong (meaning that the drummer on this mix is Ringo).

  1. Does it not seem that if the Beatles had this version of PPM recorded on Sept 11 they would have released it rather than Love Me Do, which wasn't and good? And doesn't this version of PPM sound very close to the Nov 26 version? In other words, it was recorded on Nov 26.

  2. To your first question ("Does it not seem that if the Beatles had this version of PPM recorded on Sept 11 they would have released it rather than Love Me Do, which wasn't and good?"), I think not. Primarily, both The Beatles and George Martin (still a company man) had committed heavily to "Love Me Do." Secondarily, "Please Please Me" was still very rough, whether we use as evidence this recording or George Martin's own description ("Recording Sessions" p.21). To your second question, ("Doesn't this version of PPM sound very close to the Nov 26 version?"), I do agree. Comparing this recording of "Please Please Me" with George Martin's and Ron Richards' descriptions (ibid), there are great discrepancies. This recording is neither "dreary" nor does it seem unfinished, the guitar, harmonies, and drum fills very familiar. I would therefore lean to the explanation that Anthology has misidentified this recording. Nevertheless, for the sake of easy reference, I keep the listing here, rather than moving it to November 26.
