1963, February 11: Recording: Sources!

AUDIO SOURCES

General Information. This page lists only takes from this recording session which are available on bootleg. For details on the full recording session, including unavailable takes, go: here.

Released Mono and Stereo mixes are not listed on this page, but are on separate pages for each song.

Variations. This pages also lists Foundational Variations, defined as any preceding base for a released recording which (with some exceptions) has no extra material. This will become clearer as we go along.

Alternate Sources. Note that, besides those listed, many sources for these takes are usually available. If interested, peruse: here (with accessory key: here).

EXAMPLE

Take 3, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)... URT2 (SC). This means Take 3 is available in Stereo, on the Purple Chick release, derived from the Yellow Dog release, but speed-corrected. Take 3 is also available on the alternate source Ultra Rare Trax Vol. 2, which is speed corrected.

“THERE’S A PLACE

Take 1, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 2, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 3, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)... URT2 (SC)

Take 4, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)... URT2 (SC)

Take 5, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 6, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 7, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 8, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 9, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 10, S .......... PC (from YD, SC)

Variation 1.0. Foundational. "Best" rhythm take before harmonica overdub. Absolutely dry, except input effects. The available source cuts off after 4x “there’s a place” at the end, the same as the released mix.

Take 11, M ........ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 12, M ........ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 13, M ........ PC (from YD, SC)

Variation 2.0. Foundational. This is the final recording master, but before final mixing and added processing. Absolutely dry, except input effects. Faded the same (or nearly the same) as the released mix.

“I SAW HER STANDING THERE”

(initially called “Seventeen” or “17”)

Take 1, S ............ PC (from CCR+ARS+YD, SC)

Variation 1.0. Foundational. Rhythm take eventually used, before handclap overdubs. The count-in is wrong (Take 9 count-in not yet substituted), but the body of the song is complete, so consider this Variation “untrimmed” (there extra sounds* after the song proper ends). Absolutely dry, except input effects.

Take 2, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)... URT1 (SC, muddier)

Take 3, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 4, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 5, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 6, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 7, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 8, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 9, S ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 9, S ............ “Free As a Bird” CD45 (added reverb, “narrow Stereo”)

Not a Variation, because it is not a deviation from a released mix but simply a different version of a released outtake. This is, however, necessary for your audio collection because the mix is authorized and different.

Take 10, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 11, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)... ARS or JB (Mock-Stereo)

Take 12, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)... ARS or JB (Mock-Stereo)

Variation 2.0. Foundational. Rhythm (Take 1) plus utilized ("best") handclap overdubs. The count-in is still Take 9 (incorrect), but the song is complete, so consider this again “untrimmed” with only a few extra sounds* after the song ends. Absolutely dry, except input effects. The Mock-Stereo alternative is not a Variation, as it is not an authorized mix and adds nothing to the knowledge base.

* The “extra sounds” are heard after both Take 1 and Take 12, and include a bass string buzz plus drumsticks hitting.

“DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET”

Take 7, M ............ PC (from SP+YD, SC)... NFS a substitute for SP

Take 8, M ............ PC (from YD+UM1, SC)

Variation 1.0. Foundational. The rhythm take which would truly be Variation 1.0 is not available. This is the final recording master, but before final mixing and added processing. Absolutely dry, except input effects (the drumsticks still sound unearthly!). Faded the same (or nearly the same) as the released mix.

“A TASTE OF HONEY”

Take 6, M ............ PC (from UM1+YD, SC)

Variation 1.0. Foundational. The rhythm take which would truly be Variation 1.0 is not available. Sulpy was correct; this is one vocal shy of the final recording master. Listen near the end for these two pieces of evidence:

(1) After Paul sings “I’ll come back,” the chorus that sings “he’ll (or you’ll) come back” is missing an ascending harmony in this Variation which is clearly heard in Variation 2.0 (Take 7).

(2) After Paul sings the next line (“for the honey”), the chorus that echoes him is missing one of the vocal parts in this Variation which is clearly heard in Variation 2.0.

Dry, except input effects, but that doesn’t mean this Variation isn’t full of reverb. The end cuts abruptly, but does not seem to be missing any information.

Take 7, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Variation 2.0. Foundational. This is the final recording master, but before final mixing and added processing. Dry, except input effects, but it sure is wet! Faded the same (or nearly the same) as the released mix.

“MISERY”

Take 1, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 2, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 3, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 4, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 5, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 6, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 7, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

Take 8, M ............ PC (from YD, SC)

NOTES:

(1) The foundational rhythm take (“best”) was Take 11, which is not available.

(2) Though on the same EMI reel as Takes 1-8, Take 9 is omitted from every source. I don’t know why.
